When you visit the Airliner, get ready to wait. Do not come in starving, because the place will be packed and you will not be eating very soon. However, there is a reason why the place is busy...the pizza is good and the prices reasonable. Once you do sit down, you have a choice of deep dish (no, this is not Chicago deep dish, it's not Malnati's so make allowances), regular crust (which is kind of thick), and thin, crispy crust (my favorite). With a bevy of toppings for your nom-nom pleasure. I recommend that you consider the personal pizza. It is about 10 inches and perfectly sized for a meal. Plus, this way you can have it your way, and so can your dining companions. Lastly, you should know that the Airline will gladly accommodate large groups. We walked in with 13 students and were seated within 45 minutes. Damned good for such a large group. Also, you should know that our waitress happily provided us with 13 different checks. Also, pretty freaking awesome.

We have to give this place 4 stars simply because of "Kelsey" ...we went for the Michigan / Iowa game and it was packed to no end, Kelsey had no problem making certain we were taken care of, though she had thousands around her......Thanks Kelsey!

We didn't go for the pizza, we went because we were hungry and for a sunday the place wasn't that empty. Which was odd because it was during football season and there were about 5 different games on. All but 1 was easily viewable from my seat, and my boyfriend could see that one, and I could see one that he couldn't. The service was good in my opinion, a little slow, but not so slow that we got upset. The food was good.

I guess at some point of the night we decided to do our own lil pub crawl and ended up here. Had a nice crowd for a monday night and drinks are just so darn cheap. People can easily get s**tfaced here.

Service. Sooo awful. Expect to wait 10 minutes just to put in your order. Then wait a long time for your pizza. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because the buffalo chicken pizza is delish!

Nice local bar with VERY good pizza - it's right by the college though, so expect it to be loud and busy most of the time.

Wow. Hands down one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Period. The Hubs is a Hawkeye grad and insisted that we make a stop at the Airliner per family tradition. FAMILY TRADITIONS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE BROKEN. We happened to be there during the college's spring break... meaning we did not have to wait to be seated in a booth- score! Additionally it was during the basketball playoffs so it was fun to watch in an actual college bar- so much more emotion! We could not make a decision between the chicken pesto pizza and the buffalo chicken (based on prior Yelp reviews). The waitress eased our concerns and said it was no biggie to split the pizza 50/50. I'm glad we did this because I still do not know which pizza I would have selected. There were great beer selections and a couple specials going on. Next time we are in IC, we are definitely keeping to family tradition!

Walking into door and you return to the days of thenlocal hometown tavern. The long bar Dar wood adenovirus could easily dot in hundreds of. Family run bars throughout the Midwest. But this ain't no typical bar. Clean. Friendly. Great staff. Great food. And cold beverages. This is a sports bar. Six tv's wirh th reel at bars reach. Ten booths. And toss in a few tables. Go for the pizza. Stay for the atmosphere. I had a meat eaters ten inch deep dish more than enough for two. Flakey crust. Cheese toasted just ri ghost it. Zesty tomato sauce. Lots of meat. Pkenty of flavor. Or. Just get a wrap. Huge. Fresh. Tasty.

This is where Ashton Kutcher got discovered when he was a student at Iowa! I love their pizza and drinks.

Just had the pizza here, it was pretty bad. Can't say much more, I don't think I would come back here.

The gluten free pizza is delicious here! I love the chicken pesto pizza. The servers are always very nice. However, they advertise that they deliver every day but they rarely do actually deliver.

I ate here recently with two coworkers while I was in town for business. None of us really cared for the food, but the worst part was that our waitress was really rude. I would not go back.

HAWKEYES and hot guys. Yes, this place is swarming with frat boys and plastered with tv's so if you want to be in a scene or watch the game, Airliner is a good pick. The pizzas are decent and the menu has a large variety so you can take a vegetarian, your grandma who wants a cup of soup and your brother who'd prefer a mooing cow.

The pizza was extremely average. Sause = average, cheese = average, and I think you get the point. Liked their selection of beer, but what I really loved was there cheese fries. But honestly that wasn't their success, who the hell doesn't love fries covered in nacho cheese? And also I read that their service wasn't that great from other reviews. I have to disagree. Their service was really good. We were served quickly, greeted with a smile, and not rushed to leave after we finished our food. We did come on a Tuesday around noon, so that could explain it. But those whom complain about it being crowded on a Friday night... Duh! College town... Friday night... HOW DARE THESE COLLEGE STUDENTS GO OUT FOR FOOD AND DRINKS!!!!!! I probably wouldn't come back here again, but I wouldn't avoid it either. Just extremely average all around.

The bouncers put their hands on customers without any cause or reason. At last call the bouncer attempted to pull me out of the booth by my arm.

Holy awesome pizza! A group of us got Pizza's on half price night (Tuesdays') and it did not disappoint. The Buffalo chicken pizza and the meat lovers equavalent were both amazing! It made me wish Tuesday came two or three times a week! Got delivery one night as well....in the middle of the year's biggest snow storm. Brother didn't just deliver it, he did it with a smile and with swagger that few have the chance to show!

We had pizza, salads, burgers and a meatball sandwich. Everything was great. make sure you are interested in the college bar atmosphere. We were there early dinner, but I can see this place a rockin'.

Boo. This place used to have the best pizza in IC. The pizza was so thick and slices were so big that you had a hard time eating two. Now it's a dud. Go get a Sam's calzone instead.

Great place to stop in and have a few. No hassles from the bartender (Mitch) and everyone was willing to Change a channel to get the games u wanted. Would have thought it was busier than it was, but that was fine-gave us the ability to talk in our group! Definitely will come back again!

Had the Cessna burger a few times, good, but not the best burger in Iowa City.

Very tasty pizza with absolutely delicious crust. I had the Buffalo Chicken Pizza with the Airliner Regular Crust and I was quite pleased. The pizza was loaded with cheese, tomatoes, celery and chicken. I must admit, the tomatoes were an interesting addition to a buffalo chicken pizza, but it worked. The buffalo sauce is very subtle so it doesn't overpower the pizza, but I did expect more of a robust flavor. The Airliner offers a number of different crust to compliment their pizzas: a deep dish, regular (kinda like hand tossed) and a thin crust. I had the Airliner Regular which was absolutely delicious. All in all, a very tasty pizza. Add a bit of ranch dressing for dipping and you're set!

Pizza runs through my veins. And when you are a student and miss your deep dish roots back in the Chicago area, the Airliner helps bring you back....and in a good way. First of all, the service here sucks. I'll just go ahead and say it. When eating here with my parents a couple years back my dad got so fed up he went and got himself a refill on his drink at the bar. I still laugh about that one. But I eat out for food, not for the service. And the pizza here is very good. It's about the closest thing in Iowa City you will find to Chicago style deep dish pizza. I've never tried anything else off the menu so I can't comment beyond that. But I've had the pizza numerous times and have always enjoyed it. For a very good deep dish pizza, give it a shot and experience that hint of Chicago style with an Iowa City twist.

Two lovely things about the Airliner: half-price pizza night, and the inconsistency. On half-price pizza nights, the kitchen gets so swamped that they eventually start playing your crust request by ear. For example, you order a deep dish but obviously got a regular crust with the edges rolled up a little. Or maybe you order a regular crust, and you get a deep dish that had the edges rolled down. Or maybe they burned it. You never know what you are going to get! I know this would get plenty of uppity Yelpers to start foaming at the mouth and threaten the manager, but if you've gone to half-price pizza for weeks at a time as I have, a little bit of inconsistency can bring some excitement to your life. If you like getting the pizza you actually ordered, half-price pizza night is not for you. Also, avoid the Philly pizza. Alfredo-sauce pizza may sound awesome at first, but I wanted to hurl after a few slices. Also, they put so much pepperoni on the Supreme that I sharted on the way home from pizza night once. Better to just stick with the buffalo chicken.

I'm surprised by how many people like the pizza here. It was barely edible. There are a lot of TV's, if you can stand all the frat boys. There are better places to get pizza (Pagliai's) and better places to watch the game (Sports Column). Save yourself a headache and skip this place.

Loved it! Here one busy Sat night after a Hawkeye football game. Great pizza! Normally I am a fan of the deep dish, but the crust on the pizza we had melted in my mouth. Drinks were a tad too strong. (did I really just type that?) For the evening almost ended at 6! (went to hotel to regroup!) Our waitress was on top of it also

Lots of flies, average pizza, and a DEFINITE bro bar. Not our scene, won't be returning.

Stopped in on a Friday night before a football game. The place was packed to the brim and apparently there was a bar crawl going as well so I think even more people than usual were crammed in. Surprisingly, the wait wasn't that long, about 20 minutes or so. Service was OK. Nothing to complain about. The girl was good with keeping beers coming to the table and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We shared an order of the cheese fries, boneless wings, and got a small BBQ chicken pizza. All were pretty good. Nothing really stood out to make me remember the food but at the same time it wasn't anywhere near bad at all. I was kind of disappointed I didn't order the buffalo chicken pizza. I saw three or four different tables eating one and they looked fabulous. I will definitely try one the next time in. As for the ambiance, I really liked the bar area. It's too bad it was so busy I couldn't even get to the bar but they have a lot of TVs around the place. Looked to be a good place to enjoy a game.

If I could give less than a 1 star, I would. Their Italian beef sandwich, featured prominently on their menu (and being in the same time zone as Chicago) I thought would be a good choice. I have never been so wrong. Without question the worst sandwich i have ever had. It's a worse than steak ums from when I was 10. The smallest portion of beef imaginable. Just terrible. On the up side, nice atmosphere. Good service.

This place has so many faces as an establishment it might as well be diagnosed with multiple personality business disorder. Part restaurant, part fratty bar, and part chill/dive watering hole. Depending on when you go. As a high school kid I would come with my buddies for the delicious dollar slices of pizza (they are now $1.75 but hey that was 10 years ago). As a college kid I would come to scam on 18 year old freshman, and now 10 years later I am back to watch football and consume as many slices of pizza before I explode! Great place and it's been around town for decades. Changed ownership and I wish they still had their infamous beer battered chicken, but still worth it for the Sunday slices! You're flying friendly skies at the Airliner! They have a special every day of the week ranging from $2 beers to $1 'you call its.'

Been here both for nights out on the town, lunch with family, and takeout on pizza Tuesdays. It is overall a pretty chill place and enjoyable with any age group. Good for family when they come to visit. Although Tuesdays are the best, half price pizzas for take out or dine in, definitely worth the money for the amount of pizza you get!

I am blown away that people are impressed by this pizza. This speaks more to the sad lack of decent pizza in this town than anything else. The Airliner is a big bar that serves big bar food; nothing more, even if their prices attempt to trick you.

Continuous terrible service and medicore food.

Above-average burgers and mediocre pizza abound. A hybrid bar for upperclassmen and minors alike (and frequented by good numbers of Iowa alumni as well). Nothing is too overly expensive either.

The Black & Bleu pizza is great. Steak, alfredo & blue cheese crumbles. The calamari looked like onion rings.

The pizza is good, but the service is awful. I do not recommend eating at the airliner because of the bad management and bad staff.

Extra protein in your water: just had my dinner there, and noticed a suspicious dot at the bottom of my water, yes, a dead FLY. And the waitress's response "would you like another one?" Great, do I look like a frog? The case is closed with a simple "well, sorry about that". Disgusting and will never go there again.

First off, I am a Chicago-born Deep dish consuming leviathon born with a food xenophobia. But after attending U of Iowa for more years than i intended, there were some places in Iowa City I actually enjoyed a lot to build bridges of cuisine. This is a prime example. Those of you attending now will not remember the old, dank settings of a bar that had a few miles on it. But lucky for us, after the renovation to the interior, the quality of pizza has not hindered. No this is not Chicago style deep dish (Gino's), but it's still pretty good, especially on hungover sundays when they have real cheap pizza. Good for when you spent more money on saturday night than you planned on. -I've been threatened by my girlfriend to add "they have good salads", so you can take a chick there and impress her with your pizza eating skills.

Their are different types of pizzas; Chicago, New York, Homemade BUT if you like deep dish pizza you would really enjoy eating at this place. It's defintely as good as it gets in Iowa City. My boyfriend raved about this place before our trip to Iowa and I'm sure glad his raves proved itself when I took a bite of the crunchy yet tender toppings of pepperoni and cheese. A must go if you find yourself craving for deep dish.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the 1st and 10 burger from the Airliner. The spinach artichoke dip was good too.

Went to watch the NIT. Good selection of beer and the service was great given it was so busy. Had the penne pasta with meat sauce. It was huge.....after the salad, I took 70% of the pasta dish home. The pasta was great!

A couple complaints about an otherwise solid joint. Beware of the Air Bus burger. It's the 2lb burger you can order and, if consumed in 1/2 hour, you get a free tshirt. Sounds fun, right? My boyfriend and his pal gave this a shot last week and both ordered it medium rare. Both got well well well done (actually really dry) burgers. Neither even wanted to try for the 1/2 hour because it just wasn't that enjoyable an experience. The cook came out to justify - how, if he cooked it medium, it would be raw in the middle. He said "oh, you don't want it medium." Um, yeah, actually, they did. They could have taken it off the grill 5 minutes earlier and it would not have been raw. And, even if that was the case, why didn't the waitress tell them this when they specifically ordered their burgers medium rare? Other review - the crab cakes - a new addition to the menu - taste like Stove Top stuffing with a little bit of crab flavor. Not worth it and pale in comparison to most of the other crab cakes in town. On the other hand, though, this is still the best pizza in Iowa City. I think it's better that Pagliai's. And the chicken enchilada soup is great.

Only had the delivery pizza, once, and it was pretty bad. Undercooked crust, bland sauce, and way too much cheese. I guess that shouldn't matter if you are tanked enough. I guess I wasn't.

  • Sarah L.

Each time I come here, I receive such horrible service and cold food that I vow to never come back. Of course, every once in a while a friend suggests it, so I grudgingly go back. But never again! Truly, I will NOT go back to this restaurant. The pizza isn't even that good.

  • Jennifer T.

The food is alright, but the service is bad. I've had waitresses drop off menus and leave, not to be seen for ridiculous lengths of time. It really gets to be a problem when it happens over and over again.
